I want you to Silence me until it isn't debilitating anymore.
❰ best to just come out and say it plain, probably. adalia has a legitimate reason she thinks would be inquisition-approved for this — she's a melee fighter just as often as she's ranged, so it only makes sense for her to be able to shrug off a silencing from enemy templars — but it isn't her only reason. alistair's not a moron. he can draw his own conclusions and make his own decisions. ❱
[ And after a moment's pause to collect thoughts, he shares all of them, at length: ]
I don't think you can ever make it stop working, or anything, and it isn't meant to hurt. I don't know what it feels like to have magic so I can't say what it feels like to suddenly not have any, obviously, but I've heard it's like being suddenly blindfolded, or deafened, or something. The trick would be not letting it throw you off, and being ready to keep fighting without magic while you wait out their ability to keep you cut off. So it would probably be best to do it sparring, don't you think? So you're multitasking and you can't see it coming.
We're resistant to magic as well, so as long as you're gentle, I can take it. Sparks, anyway. Lighting me on fire or something is still going to sting.
❰ well she can't just say people don't give me things i want unless i lie or take them myself, can she? true or not, it would sound pathetic, and she's trying not to look like a five year old amongst adults, here.
also she has no idea who alistair would consider an authority worth tattling to. ❱
I'm serious. You're a templar, you should need a reason for this. You should be... insisting I file paperwork, or get Coupe's approval, or anything but saying yes immediately just because I asked. Since you're not...
❰ you're obviously going to sell her out once this conversation is done. ❱
Yes, well, lllllucky for you, I never took any vows. And the Knight-Commander and the Grand Cleric can't make me kneel on gravel and pray about it for a few hours, because they're dead. Probably. They might be alive, but in that case they're very old, and I'm not afraid of them.
[ That's off topic. ]
And I owe you one, don't I? For Seheron.
You can tell me why you want to learn if you'd like to, though.
❰ yes your jokes are very funny and if this were anything but a matter of grave importance she would play along, but — ❱
Wardens may not be beholden to the Inquisition, but they could make your life hard. Your life specifically and the lives of the other Wardens, if you do something they don't like enough.
❰ oh oh hey, she practiced an answer for this. ❱
I may be a sorcerer, but I fight in melee more often than I fight at range. I have a little training in melee combat, and even if I didn't, I can't help myself. I want to be where the action is. If an enemy templar tried to Silence me when I was in the thick of things, I'd be a sitting duck.
❰ see its a very good reason she deserves this it's totally legitimate ❱
That sounds like a good reason to me. This war isn't getting any more won, lately. If the Inquisition is going to prevent people from learning to fight to the best of their abilities, maybe that's part of the problem.
[ And it's not like he has the cheat codes to get around Templar abilities. There are none, save perhaps blood magic. If Adalia goes rogue they'll still work, as will magebane, and good old-fashioned Outnumbering Her With Swords. ]
But if you're worried not everyone will agree, we can find somewhere outside the Gallows to work on it. [ Is he allowed to joke again now that the serious stuff out of the way? Maybe? If not, too bad: ] The beach is nice this time of year. I could bring a picnic.
You know, I bet there's an Orlesian somewhere who's written a treatise on which wines are best paired with the sensations of open rifts and-slash-or the Fade.
❰ which is to say, a picnic at the breach sounds like a grand old time, particularly since adalia's never seen it. she can't just leave it there, though, because she's her, and she needs things to be explicit — ❱
You're really okay with this? You don't have any concerns?
No. I mean—If you go mad and start murdering people, and nobody can stop you because of this, and I have to throw myself into your path and die trying to fix my mistake, and I hope you'll feel bad about that. Just a little twinge of guilt. As long as you agree to that, I'm happy.
I let Gwenaëlle Vau— [ Wait. She has another name now. But he doesn't remember it, so he pauses awkwardly and then, ] Gwenaëlle, we work on her anchor. Maybe we could combine everyone's attempts to beat me up with magic into one event.
❰ helpfully, ❱ Oh, Gwenaëlle Baudin! She's a friend.
❰ at least she says she is, and adalia is trying to believe her. is she enough of a friend, though, that adalia is okay with her knowing that she's getting training in withstanding silencing?
well, she's a closer friend than alistair is, and he knows. ❱
That sounds like it will be a very fun disaster in the making, I'm up for it as long as Gwenaëlle is.
